Summary

Haiti suffers from an educational mold that does not support any means for growth. For example, 80% of teachers are hired without certification in order to lower a school's overhead with a minimal salary. We want our teachers to have a better understanding of ESOL and teaching methods that enrich the classroom. This project is funding teacher certification in the English Language through a world renowned course. The more teachers we are able to support, the more students we can uplift.

Challenge

About 80% of teachers are hired without certification in order to lower a school's overhead with a minimal salary. Becoming a certified teacher in Haiti has requirements by the State, but neither teachers, nor schools follow these requirements. In addition, only 10 percent of schools are funded by the government. We want to break the cycle of poor educational practices by certifying 12 teachers, 8 within our school and 4 that have applied through our program.

Solution

At our school specifically, we want teachers to have a better understanding of ESOL and teaching methods that enrich the classroom. This project is funding teacher certification in the English Language through a world renowned course: Bridge TEFL 120-hour program. We want to give students of all ages the opportunity to learn from great educators and have access to remote opportunities and ultimately remote work. If our school is accredited, we have the chance to partner with Google Education.

Long-Term Impact

Each year students come to our school because it is safe and well-known. In 2024, Happy Haitian Education will host an annual Summer Camp which serves over 250 children for three months whereby they learn English, participate in physical activities and enjoy one meal each day. Based on our school attendance in 2023 during regular term, we served, on average, 111 students year-round. According to our estimations, the teachers we are certifying will impact over 1,000 students year-round.
