A Seizure-Response Service Dog for Zarek

A microproject by Chelsea Hutchison Foundation
A Seizure-Response Service Dog for Zarek

Summary

This project will dramatically reduce the stress on this young man's family as they deal with the issues of epilepsy and seizures. Seizure response dogs are a special type of service dog, specifically trained to help someone who has epilepsy or a seizure disorder. The Chelsea Hutchison Foundation is currently fundraising to be able to provide a grant to Zarek's family. Due to the differing needs between each case, every potential seizure dog receives specialized training.

Challenge

Zarek is not allowed to do what other 16-year old boys do because of safety and knowledge. His family believes that others will be more understanding when they a see a service dog with him. An epilepsy diagnosis is a lonely one. A service dog encourages other to reach out and will give Zarek the confidence he needs to be a little more independent.

Solution

His service dog will be able to carry emergency medications and information so that if Zarek is in trouble, other will be able to help and know to help. His seizure response dog will be able to alert his family when he is having a seizure and bring emergency medications if possible. Equally important is the security it will bring to both Zarek and his family knowing he will never be alone.

Long-Term Impact

This particular project will provide seizure-response dogs for people living with epilepsy, greatly increasing their chances of surviving life-threatening episodes that may arise. This project will also raise awareness about SUDEP to encourage further support of individuals living with epilepsy, their families, and their communities.
