This project will build connections between American and Yemeni youth by addressing important issues in their lives through radio theater. Youth will work together to write, produce, exchange, and share radio dramas with their communities.
In the U.S., many youth lack exposure to other cultures and are limited by negative stereotypes about the Middle East. In Yemen, many young people do not have opportunities to express their opinions, and their ideas are often overlooked and underestimated. It is important for youth from different cultures to listen to each others' voices and learn from each others' experiences. It is equally important for communities worldwide to listen and learn from tomorrow's artists and leaders.
This project will teach 20 youth in Seattle, WA script writing, voice acting and radio production, and connect them to 20 young adults at FM Shabab, World Arts Access' pioneering, youth-run radio station in Sana'a, Yemen. Both groups will produce radio dramas based on themes they select together and share their work with American and Yemeni audiences. The project will break down cultural barriers and promote peace by connecting young people and providing a platform for their voices to be heard.
By making and sharing creative radio dramas, youth will gain crucial professional, technical, artistic and interpersonal skills. This project will provide a model of how to build bridges across social and cultural differences and teach youth lifelong skills for learning from "others." Youth will inspire their peers and educate their communities while increasing their self-confidence and leadership capabilities. The project will also increase the public's intercultural interest and understanding.
